On Saturday, October 4, 2014, Music at the Institute presented a concert In Memoriam Andrij Paschuk (1926-2013). Works by Beethoven, Sichynsky, Barvinsky, Nyzhankivsky, Chausson and Brahms performed by Oksana Krovytska, soprano, Oleh Krysa and Solomiya Ivakhiv, violin, Natalia Khoma, cello, Magdalena Stern-Baczewska, Mykola Suk and Volodymyr Vynnytsky, piano.

Andrij Paschuk, born in Lutsk, Ukraine, was the son of a Ukrainian deputy to the Polish parliament from Volhynia. After receiving his diploma in civil engineering from the University of Munich, he went on to hold many managerial positions in a number of reputable engineering firms in the United States and abroad. He was a fervent Ukrainian patriot and worked tirelessly for the betterment of the Ukrainian community and the furtherance of the Ukrainian cause. In the 1960s, he took a very active role in raising funds for Ukrainian studies at Harvard University, regarding the program as a great accomplishment for the Ukrainian community in the U.S. For almost 50 years, Andrij Paschuk was an active member of the Ukrainian Institute of America, where he served on the Board of Directors and at one time as Vice-President. He was also a founder of the “Music at the Institute” concert series and supported a number of distinguished Ukrainian musicians in their endeavors. An avid collector of Ukrainian art, he was an enthusiastic patron of Ukrainian artists. The long-term loan of the Sumyk Archipenko Collection to the Ukrainian Institute was secured and organized through his efforts. The advancement of higher education in Ukraine was also of vital importance to him, and he was a committed supporter of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy in Kyiv. Andrij Paschuk spearheaded an initiative to name a street in Kyiv after Alexander Archipenko and launched a campaign, still under way at the Ukrainian Institute, to name the airport in Kyiv after Kyiv native Ihor Sikorsky. Through his efforts, the distinguished Ukrainian community activist Stephan Chemych will be posthumously honored in Ukraine with the Ukrainian state award, Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th Class. Andrij Paschuk’s public spirit, enthusiasm, and commitment to the UIA will be greatly missed.

Soprano OKSANA KROVYTSKA, honored with the New York City Opera’s “Diva Award,” was described by The New York Times in the review headline of Madama Butterfly as “The Butterfly Puccini wanted” and acclaimed as “the center of our attention and the object of our admiration.” Following her successes through ten seasons with the New York City Opera, Ms Krovytska became internationally known in a host of title roles sung in the world’s famous opera houses, as well as numerous concert appearances with leading orchestras throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East. Featured on many recordings, her performance of Dvorak’s Requiem with the Czech conductor Zdenek Macal and the New Jersey Symphony on Delos won a Grammy Award.

Violinist OLEH KRYSA, long esteemed in the former USSR as a distinguished soloist, chamber musician, and teacher, was a prominent student of David Oistrakh and the winner of major prizes in the Wieniawski, Tchaikovsky, and Montreal competitions, and of the gold medal in the Paganini Competition. Acclaimed by critics as a “musician of the first rank” (New York Times), and as “a player who brings subtlety and calm elegance to every musical phrase” (Washington Post), he performs regularly in the world’s major music centers and with leading orchestras and conductors. He has also appeared at major festivals in Europe, North America, the Far East, and Australia. He has recorded on the Melodiya, BIS, TNC, Triton, Olympia, Amadis, and Russian Disc labels.

Violinist SOLOMIYA IVAKHIV, hailed by critics for performing with “a distinctive charm and subtle profundity” (Daily Freeman), enjoys an international career as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe, North America, and China. Many of her performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio, Voice of America Radio, Ukrainian National Radio and Television, and Chinese Hunan Television. A highly sought-after chamber musician, she regularly collaborates with such renowned artists as Joseph Silverstein, Gary Graffman, Roberto Diaz, Claude Frank, Steven Isserlis, Gil Kalish, Philip Setzer, Eugene Drucker, and Valentina Lisitsa. Ms. Ivakhiv is the Director of the “Music at the Institute” concert series.

Cellist NATALIA KHOMA, winner of top prizes at the Budapest Pablo Casals (1985), Markneukirchen (Germany, 1987), and the Tchaikovsky (Moscow, 1990) International Competitions, as well as first prize at the 1990 Belgrade International Cello Competition, has concertized as recitalist and soloist with leading orchestras to glowing praise from critics throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle and Far East. Calling her playing “magical and deeply touching,” the New York Concert Review writes: “Khoma plays with masterful authority… Her tone is dark, focused and pure. The playing was perfectly controlled and beautifully expressive.” She also regularly appears at international festivals in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Canada, Ukraine, and the United States.

Pianist and harpsichordist MAGDALENA STERN-BACZEWSKA is a winner of the Mieczyslaw Munz Piano Competition, the International Chopin Competition at the Kosciuszko foundation, and the Dorothy MacKenzie Recognition Award. Her performances, hailed as “eloquent and technically flawless” (Washington Post), have been broadcast on radio stations across America, including WQXR, NPR, Voice of America, and on European Radio and Television. Her CD “A Tribute to Glenn Gould” (2008) was described by the Gramophone as “beautiful and intimately scaled.” Ms. Stern-Baczewska recently joined Columbia University as Director of the Music Performance Program.

Pianist MYKOLA SUK, winner of the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 1971 International Liszt-Bartok Competition in Budapest, has been described by American Record Guide as “a formidable talent… with an astonishing blend of muscular power, poetry, and utter control.” His international career has spanned four continents, with performances in the most prestigious venues, from the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory to Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has appeared to great critical acclaim as both soloist and chamber musician on the world’s major concert stages and at many distinguished chamber music festivals. He has recorded on Melodiya, Russian Disc, Hungaraton, Meldac/Tritan, Troppe Note/Cambria, and Music & Arts (USA) labels.

Pianist VOLODYMYR VYNNYTSKY, a laureate of the Margueritte Long-Jacques Thibaud Piano Competition in Paris (1983) and winner of the Distinguished Artists Award (New York, 1994), has appeared in solo recitals and with leading orchestras throughout Europe, the United States, Brazil, and South Africa. He has also earned the reputation of a brilliant chamber musician, performing around the world with noted ensembles and in collaboration with many distinguished artists. Described by critics as possessing “incredible technique and deep musical understanding” (American Record Guide), his performances have been featured on NHK-TV (Japan), and WQXR and NPR in the United States.
